Gabriel Asoka - The Mazeking

Brief Artist Bio

Gabriel Asoka, The Mazeking ( 飛龍 ) is an American philosopher & visual artist born in Maryland. Asoka has been creating provocative and energetic artworks for more than five decades. Asoka started making art as a young child and has continued throughout his life. At age 7, he became interested in ancient philosophy and esoteric concepts, which continue to inspire him. He made his first short film at age 11 and continued to make short films throughout his youth. At age 15, he started college classes around his high school schedule, studying science and philosophy. During this period Asoka was the lead singer and song writer for two bands, Dusty & The Dustmen and The Twiggy Love Band, recording three albums and performing over 50 live shows. After high school, Asoka briefly worked for a bank for several months before leaving to pursue work in the motion picture industry as a means of supporting himself and further exploring visual imagery and cinema; working on films including, Mars Attacks, Flags Of Our Fathers and Beautiful Daydreams. In 1998 he started to focus his time and energy on painting, still photography and other artistic mediums, producing a series of oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and paper. In 2002, he had his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. In early 2008, Asoka spent 3 weeks in a self imposed meditation retreat and in the last 10 days, produced a handwritten 500 page book on meditation methods, to be used as a meditation manual. Asoka utilizes various mediums in the process of creating works, including oil paint, acrylic paint, organic dyes, oil sticks, charcoal, gesso, film celluloid and handmade paper.
